**Quick answer**

Message Optus through My Optus or My Account, or call customer service on 133 937. Name the service you want cancelled and ask for a written final-cost quote. If you are keeping a phone number, arrange the port with the new provider first.

### Choose the service you are closing

- Mobile SIM-only: check the contract
Current and older fixed-term arrangements can differ. Find the Critical Information Summary for your own plan.

- Mobile with a device: check the remaining payments
Ask for the device payout separately from the service charge and any credits that stop.

- NBN: check billing and modem obligations
Current Optus terms require remaining device payments when an associated device payment plan ends.

- 5G home internet: get specific return instructions
Do not assume returning a modem removes a repayment obligation. Optus describes returns for particular circumstances.

## Keeping the number comes first

ACMA says only active numbers can be ported. Ask the new provider to accept and arrange the transfer before requesting disconnection. The transfer does not erase amounts owed to the old provider.

For a household with several Optus numbers, read back the exact service to be closed. Keep any other numbers and subscriptions on a separate list; “cancel my account” can be too imprecise for the outcome you want.

## What does cancellation cost?

For the current nbn offers reviewed, Optus says advance charges for the remaining payment cycle are not refunded unless the agreement or consumer-law rights provide otherwise. Associated device payments become payable and applicable device credits are lost. These are current-offer terms, not a ruling on every older contract.

Ask for the effect of two dates if you are close to the next payment: cancelling now and cancelling at the end of the paid period. Let the actual quote decide; there is no single bill-day shortcut that works for every Optus product.

### Get a complete cancellation record

1. Open your latest invoice and plan terms
Note the account number, service number and any equipment instalments.

2. Ask for the effective date and total
Request the service charge, device balance, lost credits and any other exit cost as separate amounts.

3. Confirm equipment instructions
Ask what must be returned, when, and whether returning it changes the amount payable. Keep the reply.

4. Save the reference and final invoice
Check that the remaining services still work and the cancelled service is no longer billed after the agreed date.

For Prepaid, distinguish stopping AutoRecharge from permanently closing the number. If the number is important, ask Optus about its status and arrange any transfer before letting it lapse. Removing an app or taking out the SIM is not a cancellation request.

If the final invoice differs from the quote, ask Optus to explain each difference using your cancellation reference. Keep the relevant bill and chat transcript together so you do not have to retell the whole history.
