> Anthropic’s new adviser plugin connects client systems and prepares drafts for review. Its US-focused compliance features are not proof of Australian suitability.

Anthropic announced Claude for Financial Advisors on 14 September: a plugin combining connections to financial systems with workflows for meeting preparation, portfolio review and follow-up drafts. Its stated role is to assist advisers, with regulated activities and client communications subject to human review and approval.

### What you need to know

The Australian question is whether it fits your firm’s systems and obligations. A US-focused product announcement does not establish local availability or Australian regulatory compliance.

## What has actually launched

The bundled plugin supports services including BlackRock, Charles Schwab, Addepar, Envestnet, iCapital, Orion, Wealthbox, Wealth.com and Zocks. Anthropic’s wider announcement also describes other integrations; that is not the same as saying every named partner is in the bundle.

Anthropic recommends Enterprise for registered investment advisers because of its audit logs, and directs existing Enterprise users to install the plugin through Cowork. A recommendation is not an explicit statement that every other plan is excluded. Australian pricing and access have not been established in our checks.

## A useful assistant still needs a careful reader

Consider a hypothetical meeting brief. The account figures may be up to date, while the note about a client’s retirement plans is two years old. A fluent summary can make both appear equally current. A useful review asks where each important detail came from and when it was recorded.

For an initial evaluation, use a fictional household with a deliberately outdated note and a conflicting figure. Ask the tool to identify the discrepancy rather than choose silently between the two. That tests a more useful quality than how polished its opening paragraph sounds. This is a proposed test, not a result from using this plugin.

The same applies to meeting follow-up. There is a meaningful difference between a client mentioning an option and agreeing to act on it. Before accepting a draft, compare its commitments, dates and assigned tasks with the underlying record.

## US compliance features need local scrutiny

Anthropic describes screening against the US SEC Marketing Rule and assistance with AI-policy documentation. Those features do not establish suitability for Australian financial advice.

ASIC was already warning about this broader issue in October 2024. Its review of 23 financial services and credit licensees found a risk that governance would lag AI adoption. The regulator pointed to existing obligations and the need for ongoing due diligence on third-party AI suppliers. That is historical context, not an ASIC assessment or endorsement of this launch.

Before a trial touches real client records, the firm should establish what the connector can read, what actions it can propose or perform, who approves those actions and how the activity is recorded. The person reviewing a draft also needs access to its supporting information; an approval button alone is not a meaningful review process.

## What this could mean for clients

Our view is that the best outcome would be an adviser arriving better prepared and following up more clearly. The announcement does not demonstrate lower fees, better investment returns or a measured improvement in advice quality. Those would need separate evidence.

If your adviser introduces an AI tool, a practical question is: “Which of my information does it use, and who checks what comes out?” That gets closer to the experience you will receive than the model’s brand name.
