The interesting Opus rumour is not simply that version 5.1 might be coming. Leo, posting as @synthwavedd on X, suggests Anthropic may skip that number and move to Opus 5.2. His post points to identifiers mentioning 5.2 and proposes that a newer model may already be undergoing limited testing in Claude Code under the existing Opus 5 label.

### What you need to know

Leo’s post is evidence of a specific testing claim, not confirmation that Opus 5.2 has launched. The reported identifiers and backend routing have not been independently verified. Anthropic’s public documentation still listed Opus 5 when checked on 15 September.

Text: they seem to be skipping 5.1

Short excerpt. Read the full claim and its qualifications on X.

The current model comparison names Fable 5.1, Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5. It gives the Opus API identifier as claude-opus-5. The dedicated Opus page marks that model as the latest version and records its release on 24 July 2026, matching the dated launch announcement.

The decimal matters here: Fable 5.1 appearing in the catalogue does not mean Opus has received a matching update. These are separate model names. Specifications for one should not be copied into a story about the other.

## What the post actually claims

Leo says the apparent 5.2 naming suggests 5.1 may be skipped. He also suspects limited testing in Claude Code, while asserting that web requests still reach the older model. These are related claims, but one does not establish the other: a version-like identifier does not by itself prove which model answered a particular request.

He presents a side-by-side output comparison as support for a noticeable difference. We have read the original post, but have not reproduced the comparison or verified the underlying model identities. Different outputs can justify investigation without establishing a model version or a general performance improvement.

## Where does Foundry fit?

The original Leo post does not mention Microsoft Foundry. We have not located the separate Foundry-specific evidence referred to in the discussion, so we cannot say Foundry caused a version to be skipped or independently confirms a 5.2 release.

Anthropic lists Microsoft Foundry as one platform for the released Opus 5. That existing relationship is not evidence of a successor. If a new catalogue entry is the clue, the exact entry and its context matter: a named model, preview availability and a generally available release are different things.

## What would turn a rumour into useful product news?

A dated company announcement would establish what is being announced. Updated documentation would help establish what users can actually access: the model name, supported platforms, account eligibility and any rollout conditions. A claimed benchmark would also need its test name, settings and comparison model before it meant much.

Even an authentic early-access screenshot would answer only a narrow question: what was visible in that account at that moment. It would not, by itself, establish availability for every subscriber or an Australian launch time.

## Keep a useful baseline while you wait

If you use Claude for work, save a few representative tasks now, along with their inputs and the mistakes you had to correct. A tricky spreadsheet reconciliation, a small bug with a known fix or a writing brief with strict factual constraints can be more revealing than a launch-day demo. Use material you are permitted to process.

For a future comparison, keep the task and available tools consistent. Record how much checking and repair each answer needs, not just whether the first response sounds confident. We suggest this as an evaluation method; we have not tested an Opus 5.1 model.

That preparation also avoids changing several things at once. A different prompt, fresh conversation, new tool setup and different model can produce a different result without telling you which change helped.

## The position for now

The 5.2 naming and testing claim is the story to follow; our public-source check does not confirm it as a release. Keep using the model that meets your needs, and treat claimed dates and feature lists as unverified until they can be tied to a public announcement or documented access. Any later announcement needs a fresh check; this article records what was verifiable on 15 September.
