iOS 27 lands as a free update on Tuesday 15 September 2026. Before installing, give yourself time to finish a backup and read any storage warnings. This checklist follows Apple’s Australian support pages. It is not a five-minute job on every phone: wait for the backup to finish rather than treating a running progress bar as confirmation.

**Quick answer**

Before you install iOS 27: make an iCloud backup, check you have storage, plug in and get on Wi-Fi, then update from Settings, General, Software Update. The installation steps come from Apple Support; our scheduling suggestions are labelled separately.

If your phone is not offered the update on Tuesday, wait rather than hunting for a workaround. Apple has published a compatibility list on its Australian iOS 27 page; check your exact model there and follow Apple’s troubleshooting if an eligible phone is not offered the update.

## The Five Steps

**Step by step**

1. Connect to Wi-Fi, open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then iCloud Backup, then Back Up Now.
Stay on Wi-Fi until it finishes. This is Apple’s manual backup procedure.

2. While you are there, check Back Up This iPhone is on.
Automatic backups run when the phone is on power, on Wi-Fi and locked. If iCloud says you are out of space, Apple’s page says to follow the onscreen steps to buy more storage; Apple’s update guide also accepts a computer backup if you have a suitable computer and enough storage.

3. On Tuesday, plug the phone into power and stay on Wi-Fi.
Apple lists both as preparation before updating.

4. Go to Settings, General, Software Update, then tap Download and Install and follow the onscreen instructions.
   Apple’s wireless update steps.

5. For optional overnight installation, open Automatic Updates and turn on Automatically Install.
Apple says the phone then downloads and installs updates overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi, and tells you first.

## If Your Phone Says It Needs Space

Apple’s update page covers the common snag. If you are prompted about space, tap Continue to allow the system to remove apps temporarily; after the installation has finished, those apps are reinstalled automatically. Read that prompt before accepting it. Do not start deleting irreplaceable photos or videos simply to get past the warning. If you are unsure what to remove, stop and use the support link below rather than guessing.

## Our Advice on Timing

This part is editorial, not Apple’s guidance. If your phone is your only way to bank, work or reach family, there is no prize for updating in the first hour. Pick a time when you do not need the phone immediately for tickets, navigation or work calls. Waiting a day is a scheduling choice, not a guarantee that an update has no bugs; keep an eye on Apple’s security and update advice.

### Monday Night

- Check the date and time of the completed iCloud backup.
Apple shows the last completed backup under Back Up Now.

- Check available storage and read any update warning before starting.
  Settings, General, iPhone Storage.

- Choose manual or automatic installation deliberately.
Avoid scheduling the installation for a time when you need the phone.

## Sources and How This Was Checked

The iOS 27 date comes from Apple’s Australian newsroom release dated 9 September 2026. The backup and update steps are paraphrased from Apple’s Australian support pages, one published 20 July 2026 and one 13 December 2025, all read on 11 September 2026. The steps were not performed on a device for this article; they restate Apple’s documentation. The timing advice is editorial.
