Telstra and Optus have announced an extension to their 3G network shutdown deadline, now set for 28 October 2024. While the shutdown date has been pushed back, the urgency for customers to transition to 4G and 5G networks remains.
Both telecom giants have been actively preparing their customers for this change for almost five years, but with the new deadline approaching, they are intensifying efforts to ensure no one is left behind.
Telstra and Optus have been preparing their customers for this transition for nearly five years. Telstra CEO Vicki Brady highlighted the extensive efforts made to ensure customers are ready:
“We have been communicating to customers about the need to prepare and make the move for almost five years. This has included multiple letters, bill messages, SMS, public awareness campaigns, advertising – even door knocking and sending free phones to people in vulnerable circumstances, and our support for customers won’t end the day the network closes.”
Optus Interim CEO, Michael Venter, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the company’s commitment to guiding affected customers through the process: “Optus has pulled out all the stops to guide a small number of our customers impacted by the 3G switch off through the process of updating their device – and I am pleased to say the majority of them are now on compatible devices.”
Final Push for Awareness of The 3G Shutdown
Despite these extensive efforts, both Telstra and Optus are launching a final public awareness campaign to ensure that all remaining 3G users are fully informed and ready for the switch-off.
Venter explained the importance of this final push: “Adding to our extensive direct communications and marketing efforts to date, we are joining with Telstra to launch a final public awareness campaign to really drive home the safety message and get the final groups of customers to act.”
What’s Next?
As the 28 October 2024 deadline approaches, the focus for Telstra and Optus is on ensuring that no customer is left behind.
The transition to 4G and 5G will provide users with faster speeds, better coverage, and a more reliable network experience.
However, it is crucial for those still using 3G-dependent devices to take immediate action to avoid any disruption in service.
