Between A$500 and A$900 you can buy a laptop that should handle schoolwork, home admin and video calls for years, or one that struggles from day one. The price tag doesn’t tell you which. We compared 12 laptops listed at JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, HP and Apple on 30 October 2026, from A$349 to A$1,049, against a short spec checklist.

For A$500 to A$900, expect at least 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and a Full HD IPS screen; 16GB of RAM appears at around A$900. The lowest-priced model in our comparison that met every checklist point was the Acer Aspire Lite 14 with a Ryzen 3 5400U, at A$547 from Officeworks on 30 October 2026.

Skip 4GB of RAM, 64GB eMMC storage and 1366 x 768 screens, even on sale. The cheapest new Mac, the MacBook Neo, is A$1,049, or A$969 with Apple education pricing.

Sorted by price. “Meets checklist” means at least 8GB of RAM; an SSD of 256GB or more (128GB or more, not eMMC, on a Chromebook); a 1920 x 1080 or sharper screen with IPS named; and no S mode.

Prices were read on 30 October 2026, include GST and can change; limited-time sale and ticketed prices can end without notice. “Panel not stated” means the listing doesn’t name the panel type. Launch years are from AMD’s specification pages; other chip makers’ dates weren’t checked. Nothing was tested.

Shortlist by Need

Each pick below follows from a stated rule applied to the table, not from testing. None of these laptops was used or benchmarked, and stock or prices may change.

Picks From the Table, by Rule

01

Lowest price meeting every checklist point

Acer Aspire Lite 14 (Ryzen 3 5400U), A$547 at Officeworks.

  • The lowest-priced row marked ✓ All. AMD lists its processor as a January 2021 launch.
  • Suits basic home use and schoolwork on paper. Untested.
02

For work from home, lowest price with 16GB

Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 15.3, A$897 at Officeworks.

  • Also has a 512GB SSD and a USB-C port with power delivery, per Officeworks. It sits in Officeworks’ Clearance section, so stock may run out.
  • The Asus Vivobook 15 at A$899 from JB Hi-Fi is the next 16GB option, with 1TB. Untested.
03

Chromebook with the latest auto-update date

Asus CX14 (CX1405CTA), A$697 at Officeworks.

  • Google lists June 2035 for this model, the latest of the Chromebooks we could match.
  • Trade-off: its 128GB storage is eMMC. Untested.
04

If you need a Mac

MacBook Neo, A$969 with Apple education pricing.

  • A$1,049 from Apple and JB Hi-Fi, or A$1,047 from Officeworks, for 8GB and a 256GB SSD.
  • Apple’s Education Store may ask for verification at checkout. Untested.

Students should check the school’s BYOD list first, if it publishes one, because it may name an operating system. For browsing, email, streaming and banking, any ✓ All row will do the job on paper. For working from home, 16GB and a USB-C port that charges and drives a monitor are worth paying for. These are editorial suggestions. More device guides are in our technology section.

What to Insist On

Microsoft’s minimum for Windows 11 is 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage: enough to install it, not a comfortable spec. Google’s February 2024 Australian Chromebook Plus announcement listed 8GB, 128GB, a Full HD IPS display and a 1080p webcam as guaranteed minimums. Our checklist uses similar thresholds, with more storage for Windows. That is editorial guidance.

The Checklist Behind the Table

The Traps the Table Shows

Price doesn’t guarantee memory: HP’s OmniBook 3 16 is A$799 with 4GB, listed as onboard, the same as the A$529 HP 15-fd0943TU. Samsung, which makes eMMC chips, says SSDs read and write much faster than eMMC, and notes eMMC is soldered to the motherboard.

Microsoft says S mode allows apps only from the Microsoft Store and keeps Edge as the default browser. Switching out costs nothing and needs an internet connection, but can’t be undone. AMD lists the Ryzen 5 3500U, in an Acer that passes every other check, as a Q1 2019 launch. On the HP 15-fc0786AU and 15-fc0838AU, HP says the USB-C port supports data only, not charging or external monitors.

The same laptop can cost very different amounts. The HP 15-fc0838AU was A$697 at Officeworks and A$899 on sale at HP; the HP 15-fd0943TU was A$529 at HP and A$699 at JB Hi-Fi. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025, so avoid old stock still running it.

Chromebook, Windows or MacBook?

Google says ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of updates from the platform’s release date, not from the day you buy. Its Auto Update policy page lists the end date by maker and model name. Where a retailer’s name doesn’t match an entry, ask the retailer, or on a display unit open Settings, About ChromeOS, Additional details and read the Update schedule, as Google describes. After the final update, Google says security updates, bug fixes and new features stop.

Dates from Google’s Auto Update policy page, read 30 October 2026. “Not found” means no entry matched the retailer’s model name or number; it doesn’t mean updates have ended.

Windows runs the desktop software some courses and workplaces require, but needs more memory and storage. A new Mac sits just above this budget: the MacBook Neo is A$1,049 (A$969 education), and Apple lists the MacBook Air from A$2,099.

Your Rights If It Goes Wrong

The ACCC says consumer guarantees are automatic and can’t be taken away, and that warranties are extra promises on top of them; a business can’t remove your rights with a “no refunds” sign or by suggesting you need an extended warranty. Consumer Protection WA says that for a major problem, such as an unsafe product or one that doesn’t work and can’t be fixed quickly or easily, you choose a refund or replacement; for a minor one, the business must repair it free or may offer a replacement or refund. The business you bought from must not send you to the manufacturer, and change of mind isn’t covered.
