Australia Post’s Telstra deal combines fibre and satellite
A three-year agreement covers almost 4,000 Australia Post sites, with selected fibre and satellite upgrades and central network management.

Australia Post has announced a three-year agreement with Telstra to supply connectivity across almost 4,000 locations. The 28 September announcement brings a large national network of sites into one agreement, with selected upgrades using fibre and satellite services.
What you need to know
The agreement covers a national network; the announced fibre upgrades concern around 300 locations. Some regional sites will move to Telstra satellite internet over the next 12 months. The available announcements do not provide an exact count of those additional satellite sites.
What is being upgraded?
In its 29 September report, iTnews quotes Australia Post’s statement saying around 300 locations will receive fibre-to-the-premises upgrades and some regional sites will transition to satellite. It identifies post offices, delivery centres, data centres and corporate sites within the agreement’s scope.
Those figures describe different things: almost 4,000 locations is the agreement’s reach, while around 300 is the stated fibre-upgrade group. Reading them together does not mean every location is getting a new fibre connection or satellite service.
The coverage also describes the agreement as worth multiple millions of dollars. An exact contract value and a site-by-site rollout list are not established by the sources used for this report.
One place to manage a large network
Australia Post says it will be among the first organisations to use Telstra’s Adaptive Networks Centre at scale, giving its teams a common place to see and manage network services. The management layer is part of the announcement alongside the physical connections.
Telstra describes Adaptive Networks Centre as a platform for viewing sites and services, tracking orders, monitoring network status and managing changes. It offers a self-service portal and API integration. Those are the platform’s advertised capabilities; this report does not verify which features Australia Post has enabled.
Why a mixture of connections matters
Our reading of the agreement is that a national network needs to be judged at the level of individual sites as well as in aggregate. A single headline site count tells readers little about the connection available at a particular location, its capacity or the support arrangements when it fails.
As an illustrative example, a network team planning work across several branches would want to know which service each branch uses, whether an installation is complete and who is responsible for resolving a fault. A shared management system could make those questions easier to organise. That example is not a description of Australia Post’s internal systems or a measured result from this rollout.
What should customers expect?
Australia Post links the investment to improving customer service and operational performance. Those are stated aims. The announcement does not demonstrate a measured reduction in counter wait times or provide a guarantee that a particular parcel will arrive sooner.
Useful follow-up reporting would track completed upgrades, changes in service availability and customer outcomes over a defined period. It would also distinguish the performance of the connections from the many other steps involved in serving a customer or moving a parcel.
For readers interested in regional connectivity, the practical story is the use of different connection types within one large agreement. Any comparison with a home or small-business service still needs that customer’s own address, product terms and quote. The enterprise deal does not establish a residential price.
