PS5 Pro vs PS5: Price, Specs and Who Should Upgrade

A side-by-side comparison of the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro for Australian buyers. Sony says the Pro adds a stronger GPU, faster ray tracing, PSSR upscaling, 2TB of storage and Wi-Fi 7, but it has no disc drive and cost A$400 more than the PS5 at JB Hi-Fi on 30 October 2026, or A$524 more with the A$124 Disc Drive. The guide sets out which TVs and games gain from the upgrade, how to check for PS5 Pro Enhanced games, and who should stay with a standard PS5.

Sony says the PS5 Pro adds a stronger GPU, faster ray tracing, PSSR upscaling, 2TB of storage and Wi-Fi 7, but it has no disc drive and costs A$400 more at JB Hi-Fi. The tables below set out the differences, the real cost and which setups gain the most.

Upgrade if you have a 4K TV, ideally with 120Hz and VRR, and you mostly play recent big games that carry Sony’s PS5 Pro Enhanced label. Don’t upgrade if you play on a 1080p screen, mostly play older or indie games, or want discs but not the extra A$124 for the Disc Drive.

On 30 October 2026, JB Hi-Fi listed the PS5 Pro at A$1,399 and the PS5 with a disc drive at A$999, a gap of A$400. With the Disc Drive, the Pro costs A$524 more.

PS5 and Digital Edition GPU, Wi-Fi, video output, size and weight are from Sony’s 2023 slim PS5 specifications; the Digital Edition figures there are for the 1TB slim model, and Sony’s Australian page does not list them for the current 825GB model. Controller contents are from Target’s listings.

What It Really Costs

The Pro’s missing disc drive matters if you own discs. Sony cut the Disc Drive’s Australian RRP to A$124.95 in April 2025. It fits the slim Digital Edition and the PS5 Pro, plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD, and needs an internet connection to pair during setup.

What It Really Costs

JB Hi-Fi prices read on 30 October 2026.

PS5 discA$999Baseline
PS5 DigitalA$919A$80 less
PS5 Digital + Disc DriveA$1,043A$44 more
PS5 ProA$1,399A$400 more
PS5 Pro + Disc DriveA$1,523A$524 more

At Target on 30 October 2026 the PS5 disc was A$949, the Digital A$889, the Pro A$1,398 and the Disc Drive A$124, so the Pro plus drive was A$573 more than the PS5 disc.

Sony’s prices have moved twice since April 2025. From 14 April 2025 it set Australian RRPs of A$829.95 for the PS5 and A$749.95 for the Digital Edition, leaving the Pro unchanged. On 27 March 2026 it announced worldwide increases for the PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal from 2 April 2026, citing “continued pressures in the global economic landscape”. That post listed no Australian prices, and PlayStation Australia’s product pages show none, so retailer prices are the reference here.

What Your TV Decides

Sony pitches PSSR at 4K TVs and says the Pro supports 60Hz and 120Hz displays. Its support page says 120Hz needs a TV and game that both support it, plus the included HDMI cable or an Ultra High Speed cable rated for 4K 120Hz, and that VRR results vary by TV. The standard PS5 also supports 4K 120Hz and VRR, so the TV alone does not decide it.

Which Setups Gain From the Pro

The verdict column is Tech X Telco’s editorial guidance, based on Sony’s stated features. Nothing was tested.

TV or setupWhat the Pro addsVerdict basis (editorial guidance)
1080p TVSony pitches PSSR at 4K TVs; Game Boost may stabilise or improve performance in supported gamesWeak case: the 4K image gains are largely lost
4K 60Hz TVPSSR image clarity and ray tracing upgrades in enhanced gamesReasonable case if you mostly play enhanced games
4K 120Hz TV with VRRThe above, plus 120Hz modes in games that support them; VRR results vary by TVClearest case, as the TV can show the Pro’s frame-rate modes
PS VR2Sony makes no general PS VR2 claim for the Pro; some VR games are PS5 Pro Enhanced, such as Myst and Riven, which their developer says render at a higher base resolution in VR on PS5 ProCheck each VR game you play

8K output on the Pro needs a screen that supports 8K at 60Hz with Display Stream Compression, and VRR is off during 8K output.

Which Games Are PS5 Pro Enhanced

PlayStation Australia says more than 100 PS5 games are enhanced for the Pro, and that the improvements vary by game. Sony says enhanced games carry a “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label in their title, so check a game’s PlayStation Store listing. Titles on Sony’s 4 November 2024 launch list, which also appear on its Australian PS5 Pro page, include:

  • Alan Wake 2

  • Demon’s Souls

  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

  • Hogwarts Legacy

  • Horizon Forbidden West

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

  • Stellar Blade

  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered

In February 2026 Sony announced an upgraded PSSR, applied through the “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting to games that already support PSSR; Sony says results vary by game. Older games are covered too: Sony says Game Boost may stabilise or improve performance in supported PS4 and PS5 games, and the Pro plays more than 8,500 PS4 games.

The gap is not fixed. On 1 October 2026 Sony announced QSSR, an AI upscaler for the standard PS5 that games must add individually, starting with Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony says PSSR “remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro”.

Who Should Not Upgrade

Editorial guidance, based on Sony’s stated requirements: skip the Pro if you play on a 1080p TV or monitor, if most of your games are older, indie or not on Sony’s enhanced list, or if you buy discs and do not want to pay A$124 extra for the drive. Discs still matter for now: Sony says disc production for all new PlayStation games ends from January 2028, with no effect on games already released on disc. If you do upgrade, Sony says you can move your data from a PS5 in Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer.

Should You Upgrade to the PS5 Pro?

Editorial guidance. The more of these that apply, the stronger the case.
