Anthropic has released Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1, promoting gains in coding, knowledge work and scientific research. Anthropic dates its launch announcement to September 2026 without specifying a day. The capability claims are Anthropic’s; this article is not an independent performance test. For Australian readers the question that matters is narrower: which of these can you actually use, and what does it cost on the plan you already pay for?
Fable 5.1 is available on every paid Claude plan, but not the free one. On Max and premium Team or Enterprise seats it is included, up to half your weekly usage limit. On Pro and standard seats it runs on pay-as-you-go usage credits from the first message. Mythos 5.1 is the same model with looser safeguards and is currently only available to a set of vetted US organisations.
Before switching models, check your plan and seat type, because “available” and “included” are different things on this pricing.
How Fable 5.1 Access Is Billed
Claude’s help documentation sets out the same rules for Fable 5 and Fable 5.1. The distinction is whether the model draws on your plan’s weekly limits or on separately purchased usage credits.
What Fable 5.1 Costs on Each Plan

Pro, and standard seats on Team
Pay-as-you-go usage credits.
- Not included in the plan’s weekly limits
- A one-time credit applied to the Fable 5 change in July; there is none for 5.1
Max, and premium seats on Team
Included as a standard part of the plan.
- Up to 50 per cent of the weekly usage limit can go to Fable models
- After that, keep going on credits or switch models
Standard seats on seat-based Enterprise
Usage credits, if the organisation has enabled them.
- Not included in the plan’s weekly limits
Premium seats on seat-based Enterprise
Included, under the same 50 per cent rule as Max.
- Draws from the regular weekly limits
Usage-based Enterprise and the Claude API
Billed at standard API rates.
- Anthropic says Fable 5.1 costs an estimated 25 per cent less than Fable 5 for typical token-billed workloads, through cheaper cache reads
The 50 per cent allowance is not extra capacity. Fable usage draws from the same weekly limit as every other model, and Anthropic says Fable models use it faster. You can never use more than your weekly limit in total.

Mythos 5.1 Is Not an Ordinary Subscription Upgrade
Anthropic describes Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 as the same model with different levels of safeguards. Fable is generally available. Mythos is available only through Anthropic’s trusted-access programmes, with safeguards designed for vetted cyberdefence and life-sciences work.
The launch page says Mythos is currently available only to a set of US organisations, and that Anthropic is working with the US government to expand access to a broader set of domestic and international partners. That is a stated intention. Australian readers should not treat it as a local entitlement, and an Australian consumer subscription does not include Mythos.

Keep a note of the model selected, the task and the usage shown before and after it. If you compare models, give each the same input and ask for the same output; otherwise you may be comparing two different jobs. This is a suggested comparison method, not a cost benchmark.
