In a landmark transaction poised to reshape Australia’s media landscape, British sports streaming giant DAZN has agreed to acquire Foxtel for A$3.4 billion (approximately US$2.1 billion).
This deal signifies the end of News Corp’s three-decade ownership of Foxtel, which commenced operations in 1995.
Details of the DAZN Acquisition
Under the terms of the agreement, News Corp and Telstra will divest their respective 65% and 35% stakes in Foxtel. News Corp is set to receive A$578 million in cash for the repayment of outstanding loans, while Telstra will obtain A$128 million.
Post-transaction, News Corp will retain a 6% equity stake in DAZN and secure a seat on its board of directors; Telstra will hold a 3% stake.
Foxtel’s Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Delany, will continue to lead the company, which will maintain its headquarters in Artarmon, Australia.
The acquisition encompasses Foxtel’s streaming services, Kayo Sports and Binge, thereby expanding DAZN’s footprint in the Australian market.
Strategic Implications
DAZN’s acquisition of Foxtel represents a strategic move to bolster its global presence and compete with major streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, and Disney’s ESPN.
With 4.7 million subscribers, Foxtel offers DAZN a substantial user base and access to premium sports content, including broadcasting rights to the Australian Football League (AFL), National Rugby League (NRL), cricket, and Supercars.
Shay Segev, CEO of DAZN, remarked, “Australians watch more sport than any other country in the world, which makes this deal an incredibly exciting opportunity for DAZN to enter a key market.”
He emphasized DAZN’s commitment to supporting and investing in Foxtel’s television and streaming services, aiming to enhance the viewing experience for customers.
Future Prospects
The integration of Foxtel into DAZN’s operations is anticipated to yield several benefits:
- Enhanced Content Offerings: DAZN’s extensive portfolio of international sports rights, including the NFL, UEFA Women’s Champions League, and European football leagues, could be introduced to Foxtel subscribers, enriching the platform’s content diversity. News.com.au
