Apple has announced three new iPhones for Australia in two days: iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on 9 September, and iPhone Duo, its first folding iPhone, on 10 September. The Pro phones go on pre-order this Saturday and on sale next week. The Duo is a month further out and costs a great deal more. This is launch coverage of Apple’s announcements, not a hands-on review: we have not tested any of the three.

iPhone 18 Pro starts at A$2,099 and iPhone 18 Pro Max at A$2,299, with pre-orders from 10 pm AEST on Saturday 12 September and availability from Friday 18 September. iPhone Duo starts at A$3,499, with pre-orders from 11 pm AEST on Friday 16 October and availability from Friday 23 October. All prices include GST and all three start at 256 GB.

Apple’s headline claims are a variable-aperture main camera and a new thermal management system on the Pro models, and a 7.6-inch folding display on the Duo. Those are Apple’s claims until independent reviews test them.

What Is Changing on the Pro Models?

Apple says the new Pro models introduce a variable-aperture main camera, the A20 Pro chip and a new thermal management system built around a next-generation vapour chamber. The company also promotes improvements to battery life and sustained performance. Those claims still need independent testing.

The camera change is the one worth watching, but an announcement cannot tell you how often it will improve the photographs you actually take. We would want side-by-side results in everyday situations before recommending an upgrade for that feature alone.

What Is iPhone Duo?

iPhone Duo is Apple’s first folding iPhone. Closed, it has a 5.4-inch outer display that Apple says gives 90 per cent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro in a pocketable size. Opened, it has a 7.6-inch inner display that Apple describes as the largest ever on an iPhone and 50 per cent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both displays share the same aspect ratio, so content is meant to scale rather than reflow when you open it.

Under the hinge it runs the same A20 Pro chip as the Pro models, with its own thermal management system, a dual-battery layout and a grade 5 titanium body. Apple says the inner display has a nano-texture finish that reduces glare and makes the crease less visible, and that iOS 27 has been adapted for the folding layout. Durability, crease visibility and battery life are exactly the things an announcement cannot demonstrate, so treat them as claims until reviewers have used one for a while.

Two things to note before the October pre-order. It costs A$1,400 more than iPhone 18 Pro at the same storage, before cases at A$119 and A$199. And Australia is in the first wave of countries, so there is no need to import one.

Three Checks Before You Pre-order

Before You Pre-order

0 of 3 done

Our advice: if your current phone still meets your needs, leave room for the reviews. A pre-order date is not a deadline to decide whether you need a new phone, and with the Duo there is a month to wait for first impressions anyway.

Sources and How This Was Checked

Prices, dates, storage options and feature claims come from Apple’s two Australian newsroom releases, dated 9 September 2026 for iPhone 18 Pro and 10 September 2026 for iPhone Duo, both read on 10 September 2026. Nothing here is based on hands-on use. All pre-order and availability dates are future dates at publication and should be rechecked against Apple’s pages.
