Discover Australia’s Unlimited Data Mobile Plans

unlimited data mobile plans

Let’s be honest, running out of mobile data sucks. You’re scrolling through your feed, a video catches your eye, and bam – buffering. Or worse yet, you’re halfway through an important call when it cuts out. That’s where unlimited data plans come to the rescue.

Luckily, Aussie telcos have finally jumped on the unlimited bandwagon. But before you sign up for the first plan you see, there’s a catch… or rather, a few things to understand.

It’s Not Really Unlimited

Okay, let’s get real. No plan is truly, 100% unlimited. You’ll usually have full-speed data for a set amount (think 20GB, 40GB, or even more). Once you’ve chowed through that, your speed gets throttled – not ideal for streaming in HD, but still fine for basic browsing.

Think of it like switching from a highway to a dirt road. Why do carriers do this? Well, unlimited plans can put a strain on their networks, so this helps them manage things.

Some providers, such as Felix are good examples of this, they have an “unlimited mobile data plan”, however, it is speed capped at 20mbps.

That said, there are mobile data plans that do offer unlimited data, but it’s important to understand the difference between a mobile broadband and a mobile plan.

Which Telco Has the Best Deal?

Here’s where it gets interesting. Five Aussie telcos offer some form of “unlimited” plan: Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, Belong, and Felix.

Felix is the only provider that I can see, that advertises “unlimited data” at a consistent speed of 20mbps, whereas the other providers offer “unlimited” in the form of significantly reduced speeds once you use your original data allowance.

  • Telstra & Optus: Both big players offer a range of plans. Unlimited speeds are capped at a measly 1.5Mbps. Good enough for checking emails, not so much for Netflix.
  • Vodafone: Vodafone sweetens the deal with 2Mbps capped speeds. You could probably stream videos in standard definition.
  • Belong: This Telstra sub-brand stands out with 1Mbps capped speeds and a budget-friendly price tag.
  • Felix: The new kid on the block offers unlimited data (no fancy speed tiers here) but caps the whole thing at 20Mbps. That’s decent, even if it’s not technically “unlimited”.

Choosing the Right Plan

So, which unlimited data plan should you pick? Here’s what to consider:

  • Your Data Needs: Are you a casual browser, or a hardcore gamer who’s always streaming? If you’re usually on Wi-Fi, a basic “unlimited” plan might be fine.
  • Speed Matters: How fast do you need things to be after you hit that cap? 1.5Mbps vs 2Mbps might not sound like much, but it makes a difference.
  • Price: Unlimited plans aren’t the cheapest. Felix is the most affordable, while Telstra and Optus are on the pricier side.
  • Extra Perks: Some carriers throw in bonuses like free streaming of sports or music services. Worth looking into if you already use those!

Unlimited or Just a Big Bucket?

Before you jump on the unlimited train, it’s worth checking out regular high-data plans. Sometimes, a massive 100GB or 200GB plan might be a better value, especially if you’re mainly worried about running out unexpectedly, but don’t actually need unlimited data all the time.

Largest Data Allowances On Mobile Plans

Here is a list of the largest data plans in the Aussie telco market, for mobile plans. You can see Felix at number one, due to its Unlimited Data. Make sure you check that the plans are also not just promo sign-up data.

Largest Data Allowances On Mobile Broadband Plans – 4G & 5G

Now if you are after unlimited data mobile broadband, you have a plethora of options to choose from. These plans are capped at good speeds at the lower-tier providers with premium providers like Telstra, offering uncapped speeds.

The Verdict

Unlimited mobile data plans are a huge win for Aussies, especially those who live outside major cities or travel a lot.

They give you peace of mind knowing you won’t suddenly get cut off when you need your phone the most.

But, read the fine print! Knowing those speed caps is key to choosing a plan that suits your needs. I recommend you check your coverage on the relevant provider’s website.
